  • The envoy earned $107 million last year. You paid his salary.
His filing reports the money as one line, with no breakdown of where it came from.
LEAD ESSAY / 3 MIN / 4 DOCUMENTS / STORY FILE WLF-ENVOY
How much can you earn while you negotiate on behalf of the United States?
I went looking for the ceiling this week, and there isn't one. Steve Witkoff serves as special envoy for the Middle East and Ukraine. He reported almost $107 million of 2025 income. The money came from a holding company tied to World Liberty Financial. That's the crypto venture he co-founded with the president and their sons. The number sits inside a federal ethics filing, so you can check it yourself.
Look at the form itself. It's an OGE Form 278e, which in plain English means the yearly money form senior executive officials have to sign. Reporters at Bloomberg published the figure on September 8. Income from the same holding company came to $34 million a year earlier. So the line more than tripled in twelve months...
The $34 million that became $107 million
Roughly $69 million of it arrived as cash, and about $38 million arrived as cryptocurrency. The envoy also listed over $400 million in assets. His total income for the year ran past $250 million. And the form undercounts him. Filers may report a holding as a broad range, or as a floor. Over $50,000,000, with no ceiling printed.
"his prior commercial activities are completely unrelated to his efforts"
ANNA KELLY, WHITE HOUSE, VIA ABC NEWS
Put the dates beside that sentence. His income ran across all of 2025, and he spent most of those same months negotiating for the United States. But the timing is only half of it. The other half is what the form never has to tell you.
What the September 8 filing leaves out
Let me walk you through the gap. The form reports income from the holding company as a single line. It doesn't break out how much came from World Liberty Financial. The rest could be golf courses, hotels and apartments held inside the same structure. So you learn the size of the payday, but you never learn the source.
FILED / OGE FORM 278E, STEVE WITKOFF
NOT YET CERTIFIED
The disclosure covers calendar year 2025. It reached the public record on September 8, 2026. Income from the holding company appears as one figure, with no breakdown of the assets underneath. Bloomberg reported that the Office of Government Ethics has not given the filing final approval.
The same filing shows $120 million reaching Witkoff from another sale. He sold an interest in his property company, described as part of divestiture planning. No buyer is named. Both figures come out of the disclosure itself. The White House says he has fully divested, and that he takes no part in government business touching his money.
Divestment is the word to watch here. World Liberty said in May 2025 that he was stepping away. It described no operational role and no financial interest in its deals. Yet the September form still reports 2025 income from the company that held the stake. It publishes no completed, itemised sale of each World Liberty interest. So the statement and the filing describe two different things.
The $526 million sitting above him
Witkoff isn't the largest number in this structure. Trump reported $526 million from World Liberty token sales, plus another $65 million from selling equity in the holding company. Summer disclosures carry both figures. Zach Witkoff runs the firm alongside the president's three sons. And in August the group won conditional approval for a national trust bank. It came from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. That agency licenses national banks, and the president appoints the man who runs it. So one side of the decision sits with the president, and the other side sits with his sons' company.
So here's where you come in. Every April you file a return naming each dollar you earned. Your bank wants two years of statements before it lends you a cent. The men who negotiate wars in your name file one line for $107 million. They never say who paid it. You fund that office, and you don't get to see the arithmetic.
